If you want an opening that fights from the very first moves, Pirc Defence: Byrne Variation is a superb candidate — principled, sharp and endlessly instructive.
After 4.Bg5 the position resolves into a flexible centre that both sides are still fighting to define.

Ideas for White
Choose the Austrian (f4 space), the Classical (Nf3/Be2 solid), or the 150 Attack (Bg5-style storms) — each fights the fianchetto differently.
Ideas for Black
Complete development before committing, then hit the centre with ...c5 or ...e5 at the perfect moment — timing is the whole opening.
Plans & pawn structures
- 1Develop with a purpose: connect the pieces to a concrete plan (a break, a target square, an outpost) instead of making automatic moves.
- 2Watch the pawn breaks — both yours and your opponent's. In these structures the player who times the central break better usually wins the game.
- 3Trade correctly: before every exchange ask which piece benefits from the resulting square colours and pawn structure.

- As White, aim first for a healthy structure and finished development — a position with no targets defeats theoretical preparation on its own.
