On the pawns, White holds a kingside pawn majority, while Black holds a kingside pawn majority — the long-term trump to nurse into the endgame. Structurally, an isolated black pawn on the a-file: fixed targets that reward the side with the pieces to attack them.

How to Play Against the Semi-Slav, Meran, Main Line
- Target the isolated black a-pawn. Blockade the weak pawn on its square, pile pieces against it, and steer toward an endgame where it simply cannot be defended.
- Neutralise the d-file before White owns it: challenge with your own rook, or close the file with a pawn so the opponent's main artery of play dries up.
- In this open position Black must match development tempo for tempo — fall behind on castling and coordination and the open lines turn against you at once.
