Sicilian, Najdorf, Poisoned Pawn, Main Line

The full Poisoned Pawn: O-O-O, open files and mating nets against the wandering queen — the sharpest mainstream line in chess.

White's weapon·Sharp·10 movesExpert

Sicilian, Najdorf, Poisoned Pawn, Main Line is one of the most compelling entries in the Encyclopaedia of Chess Openings — and a line that repays every hour you sink into it.

After 10.e5 the position resolves into an open centre — the central pawns have largely been traded, so open files and piece activity decide the game rather than pawn play, with the b- and d-files half-open for White and the c-file half-open for Black, black is ahead by a pawn.

Strategic ideas

Ideas for White

White aims for harmonious development, central control and well-timed pawn breaks.

Ideas for Black

Black targets the centre with counterplay, seizes outposts and strikes with the thematic pawn breaks.

Plans & pawn structures

  • 1White plays down the b- and d-files — with no White pawn there, a rook lift and pawn lever turn these files into direct pressure on b7/d7.
  • 2Black's counterplay runs down the c-file: it is half-open for Black, so the rooks swing there to hit c2 while White is busy elsewhere.
  • 3In this open centre, development speed and king safety trump material — get castled, connect the rooks onto the open lines, and look for tactics against the less-coordinated side.
  • 4Play around the fixed weaknesses: White's isolated a-pawn and c-pawn can be blockaded, piled on, and won in an endgame — trade pieces if you are attacking it, keep pieces on if you are defending.

Typical middlegame structures

The main line leads to an open centre — the central pawns have largely been traded, so open files and piece activity decide the game rather than pawn play. It leaves the b- and d-files half-open for White, the c-file half-open for Black — that is where the rooks belong and where the middlegame is decided. On the pawns, White holds a kingside pawn majority, while Black holds a kingside pawn majority — the long-term trump to nurse into the endgame. Structurally, isolated white pawns on the a- and c-file: fixed targets that reward the side with the pieces to attack them.

Traps & tactical motifs

Every sharp opening has its traps — study the forcing lines around the centre and the f7/f2 squares before playing this in rated games.

Watch the typical motifs: pins against the pinned piece, knight forks after the natural captures, and queen sorties to a2/g2-style squares.

How to Play Against the Sicilian, Najdorf, Poisoned Pawn, Main Line

  • Target the isolated white a-pawn/c-pawn. Blockade the weak pawn on its square, pile pieces against it, and steer toward an endgame where it simply cannot be defended.
  • Neutralise the b- and d-files before White owns them: challenge with your own rook, or close the file with a pawn so the opponent's main artery of play dries up.
  • In this open position Black must match development tempo for tempo — fall behind on castling and coordination and the open lines turn against you at once.

Study plan & who it's for

Expert-grade warfare. The forced lines run deep, the evaluations are narrow, and preparation is half the battle — a weapon for White players who live in the engine age.
